German Chancellor (1998 – 2005) Dr. Gerhard Schroeder delivered a lecture at an event jointly organized by The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria (ACB) and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy. The event was part of the celebrations on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the ACB and was held in Sofia, on January 24 – 25, 2011.
Gerhard Fritz Kurt Schroeder (April 7, 1944) is a German politician and Chancellor of Germany in the period 1998 – 2005. A member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), he was the Head of the coalition government of the SDP and the Greens. Prior to becoming a politician, he was a lawyer, and before becoming Chancellor he was the Prime Minister of the province of Lower Saxony (1990 – 1998). After the federal election in 2005, which his party lost, after three weeks of negotiations, he retired as Chancellor in favor of Angela Merkel of the Christian Democratic Union. At the moment of the event, he was Chairman of the Board of Nord Stream AG.
