On 31 May 2019, at the Feather (“Peroto”) Literary Club in Sofia, the American-Bulgarian Alumni Association (ABAA) – part of the Atlantic Digital Network (ADN) NGO cluster of The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria (ACB), together with the European Network of Alumni Associations (ENAM) and with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, organized an international conference on “Disinformation and Fake News: In the Wake of the European Elections”.
The goal of the event was to provide good practices and guidelines for journalists and users to validate information and to avoid misinformation. A specific emphasis was placed on the impact of disinformation and fake news on the conduction of the European Elections. The event particularly focused on: the concept of propaganda; the different capacities of traditional and social media in the era of disinformation; the promotion of education as the universal response to fake news; and the fake news’ philosophy. The event brought together tech and media representatives, policy-makers working on the topic on national and EU and level, as well as international delegates from ENAM member countries. Together the participants sought to determine what can be done in order to stem the pernicious flow of misinformation.
