From 26 – 28 October 2010, a conference on the topic of “Europe for Afghanistan: From Understanding to Support” was organized by The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Euro-Atlantic Youth Club and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, with the special support of NATO and with the co-operation of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the US Embassy in Sofia, the Embassy of Islamic Republic Afghanistan and the European Commission. The event was held at the Central Military Club, in Sofia, and consisted of lectures, seminars and panel discussions by leading figures from the fields of politics, diplomacy, academia, civil society and the private sector. These components were complemented by cultural and social activities.
The topics that were considered as part of the conference’s program were: NATO Efforts to Rebuild Afghanistan: Challenges and Concerns; Outsourcing in the Defense Sector; Production of Bases and Strategic Targets in Afghanistan from Insurgency Attacks; Bulgarian Business Support in Afghanistan; EU Role in Afghanistan: An Overview of Afghanistan’s Social, Economic and Political Issues; Security Environment in Afghanistan and Its Implications for International Peace and Security: Governance and Institution-Building; EU in Afghanistan: The Bulgarian Policy Towards Afghanistan; Counter-Narcotics Strategy/Campaign: From Drugs to Rose Oil Production; Women’s Rights in Afghanistan; The Young Generation: Together in a Better World; The Role of NGOs in Rebuilding Civil Society in Afghanistan.
