On 1 March 2017, the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker presented a White Paper on the future of Europe. A series of reflection papers were published after it.
The growing instability in Europe’s neighboring regions and the world, as well as new threats stemming from economic, environmental and technological factors, gave security and defense a more important role in the future of the European project. The Reflection Paper on the Future of European Defense outlined the relevant challenges and identified three possible scenarios.
An important topic in the public conversation was security and the role of our country in this debate.
On 16 October 2017, at 10.30 am, at the Central Military Club’s Concert Hall in Sofia a discussion was held on “Together in Security. Bulgaria’s Role in the Common European Defense”.
The discussion was Initiated by the President of the Party of European Socialists Sergey Stanishev and organized by the Academy of Leftist European Policies, The Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, the Institute for Rightwing Policy, PanEuropa Bulgaria, the “Bulgarian Defense Industry” Association, “Friedrich Ebert” Foundation – Office in Bulgaria, The Sofia Security Forum, the Center for Defense and Security Research and the Center for Defense Policy Studies.
The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, politicians from different political parties, political scientists, analysts, journalists, representatives of civil society and academia.
