Bulgaria will from now on have the option to defer payments on deals for purchase of US military equipment. The journalist Nikola Lalov reminds that the Bulgarian Government had to pay 2.1 bln BGN for the new F-16 Block 70 fighter jets in advance, as the country had no credit history and a record of similar deals with the U.S.
The Bulgarian Defense Ministry had received a letter by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirming that for any contracts signed under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) in the future, the country would have the option to defer payments. DSCA will apply the option depending on the duration of the contract and the volume of defense products delivered.
Several US companies have shown interest in the ongoing procedure for purchase of new armored vehicles for the Bulgarian Army. The deal is expected to be worth some 1.5 bln BGN. The journalist also points out that the option for deferred payments could be applied in case Bulgaria decides to buy additional eight F-16 Block 70 fighter jets or for the future agreements for maintenance of the acquired fighter jets.
